Library in Surat

Surat is an ancient city on the banks of the Tapti River. It is mentioned in the Mahabharata and is an important city port visited by ships from all over the world. It became a stronghold of the Portuguese and later of the British East India Company, turning into an important commercial port. As Bombay port grew, the importance of Surat declined but centuries of tradition and heritage are still reflected in today’s city. Of all these libraries the Kavi Narmad Library, managed by the Surat Municipal Corporation, is undoubtedly the largest. It has a collection of over 226000 books and there are about 47000 members. The library occupies an area of 6158 square meters, has a large reading room and a newspaper section. The library takes its name after the famous poet Veer Narmad and was built to commemorate his 158th birth anniversary.  The recently renovated library has a rare book collection, conference hall, audio-visual room and a section for senior citizens. Children to adults to senior citizens visit this library each day and with so many titles and sections, it is indeed a treasure house of knowledge.

The Surat Municipal Corporation manages the Kavi Narmad Central Library as well as the Dr V T Vividhlakshi Vanchanalay. The policy is to play a positive role in promoting literacy and adult education, serve as an information hub and promote culture. Public libraries help meet supplementary reading needs and the Corporation is constantly introducing new media and technologies.

The University Library is another large library with the fundamental aim of serving a reader with books for every type of educational needs. Library work is always emphasized in the college and university levels by educators and they suggest that every student should do some reference library work to supplement their syllabus text book knowledge and improve their scores in the exams. The large library has a separate collection of diverse books, a film collection, a collection of Indian journals and foreign journals for scholarly reference. Students find this library especially useful since they find a large selection of textbooks and reference guides on all topics. Students can access the internet here, bring in their own laptops and study in peace. The library remains closed for only 8 days in a year including Dipavali, remaining open from 9 AM to 9 PM each day. Students also have access to reprographic facility on the premises.
