A driving license is a mandatory document required to drive a two-wheeler or a four wheeler. Any individual who knows how to drive and is 18 years old or above can obtain a driving license through the Regional Transport Authority/Office (RTA/RTO) in their respective state/city; in this case from Surat RTO. To qualify for a learning license, it is mandatory to complete the driving training course and then take an oral or a written test depending on the rules of the state/city you are residing, in this case it is Surat (Gujarat) RTA. The oral or written test comprises questions on traffic rules and regulations, traffic symbols, and vehicle systems. A learning license is valid for a period of six months.
Documents to be Submitted for Driving License
To acquire a permanent driving license, you need to submit the following documents:
- Original learner license
- Duly filled in Form No.4 (license to drive motor vehicle)
- Residential proof (Attach two attested copies of any of these documents - voter IDs card/ passport/ telephone/electricity bill/ ration card)
- Age proof (Attach two attested copies of either PAN card/ Birth certificate / Class X mask sheet)
- Two passport sized photographs (these days a web camera is used to take photographs)
- Fee as mentioned
After all the required documents are verified and found to be authentic, you need to take and clear an actual driving test. Also, the licensee should bring their own vehicle for the test. In case, you are coming through a driving school, the driving school can provide you with a vehicle. It takes about 30 to 180 days to get a permanent driving license.
Every year the Surat RTA receives and issues more than 5000 driving license. Hence, to tackle the huge rush of issuing learning license, the Surat RTA has decided to begin an online driving license portal. People who wish to apply for a learning license can apply for the same online. Also, the number of learning license issued per year has been limited to about 200 per day. This will not only make the issuance of driving license easier but make the process hassle free for expectant licensees as well. All the expectant licensees can fill in the form online and wait for their scheduled date and time to visit the RTA physically and get their documents verified.
