Hazira is a small town in Chorasi Taluka in Surat District of Gujarat State, India. It comes under Hazira Panchayath and is located 23 KM towards west from District head quarters Surat and 273 KM from State capital Gandhinagar.

Location of Hazira Port
Hazira port is located at a distance of 25 kms from Surat and 250 km from Mumbai. It is a deep-water, all-weather direct-berthing multi-cargo port and has been built with a protected harbour design, with 2 breakwaters and an additional waterfront for the development of non-LNG cargo handling facilities. Hajira and Magdalla Ports in the district provide logistic support to the industrial operations in the state with foreign countries.Hazira Port is built by Hazira Port Private Limited (HPPL), a joint venture between two of the largest private LNG suppliers in the world and Shell Gas B.V (Shell) and Total Gaz Electricité Holdings France (Total).
Connectivity of Hazira Port
Hazira Port in Surat has close proximity to the high speed dual carriageway which is under construction. The port is linked to both NH-6 and NH-8 connecting to the arterial National Highway between Delhi & Mumbai and traverses further to Central India.To further improve road logistics, the government is planning 6-lane widening of the existing roads between port and the national and state highways. The port is also well connected with main Mumbai – Ahmedabad - Delhi broad gauge railway line.
Delhi Freight Corridor is expected to be a major thrust for the industrial growth of Hazira Port. Hazira also known as the ‘gateway port’ connects the hinterlands of north, west and central India as it is situated in the midst of one of the most industrialized areas in the country.
The existing industrial portfolio of Hazira includes industrial activities such as petrochemicals, fertilisers, heavy engineering, steel, energy and port related activities.

The GMB (Gujrat Maritime Board) is planning to develop a common user berth towards South of Essar jetty at Hajira. Essar Ports operates an all-weather deep port with 30 mmtpa of dry bulk cargo capacity, which is being expanded to 50 mmtpa. The company is setting up a dry bulk terminal at Hazira with a capacity of 20 mmtpa, which will be operational by the second half of 2013-14.
Surat has been very successful in attracting a sizeable amount of Foriegn Direct Investment in various sectors like energy, oil, and petroleum. A significant investment of Rs. 3,000 crore in Hajira terminal project is one of the largest Greenfield FDIs in India.
Future Projects at Hazira Port
The expansion plans of Hajira port is envisioned in two phases. The first phase envisions the development of port infrastructure to handle liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) imports and the second phase would offer port facilities for handling dry bulk and containerized cargo. ONGC is planning to expand the capacity of Hazira refinery with an capital outlay of Rs.1,100 million. The project involves increasing the processing capacity to 69 mmscmd which includes LPG, kerosene and diesel. With the proposed development of Hazira as a Special Investment Region (SIR), focussing on Engineering, Oil & Gas and Chemicals/Petrochemicals as well as Transshipment, Hazira will undoubtedly contribute significantly to the Industrial growth of Surat, Gujarat and India.
