Surat International Airport

Surat the commercial center of Gujarat, a textile center of India and diamond business center of the world is well-connected with road, water and air from any corner of India. Surat is one of the fastest growing city in India and hold 36th rank as the largest city in the world. Being the world largest diamond business center, Surat is frequently visited by the business travelers from India and Abroad round the year. Due to several businesses and tourist visiting the city round the year, Surat airport was established on 6th May, 2007.

Surat Airport is domestic airport that is located in the longitude of 2° 50’ 0” and latitude of 21° 10’ 0” N in Magdala, eleven km south-west of Surat. The total area of the airfield is 312 hectares. Currently, it caters to scheduled airlines as well as private aircraft services. It is also a home to a flying training school.

History about Surat Airport

Surat Airport is constructed and owned by Gujarat state government. During the time period of 1990s, Gujarat airways and Vayudoot have been operating through Surat airport. But, both the airways discontinued their flights since many 1994 and 2000 respectively. The Surat airport is then transferred to AAI (Airport Authority of India) in 20003 for the modernization of the airport.  However, the initial steps to connect Surat with Bhavnagar and Mumbai was failed in July 20004 due to poor airport infrastructure. From 2004 to May 6, 20007, the airport was closed for public services. The domestic flight services from Surat airport is resumed on 6th May, 2007 with an Indian airline 319 flights that were flagged by the Indian Civil Aviation minister Mr. Praful Patel at 1240 IST.  Since then, several modifications were done in Surat airport.

Structure of Surat Airport

The new Surat airport terminal building was inaugurated by union minister of state of petroleum, Mr. Dinesh Mehta on 27th February, 2009. Constructed with the total area of 8,500 sq meter, this terminal is capable to handle more than 240 passengers per hour. The airfield is fully equipped with instrument landing system, night landing facilities and navigation facilities like NDB, DME/DVOR. Besides this, the new terminal is well equipped with CCTV cameras, hand-baggage x-ray machines, two baggage carousels and several other modern amenities.

The SIA (Surat internal airport) a no profit no loss community is formed by the citizens of Surat and the users of Suart airport  that established to raise voice their demands to get more  domestic flights to  Surat and provide direct  international air connectivity.

The demand of having a great air connectivity is raised from the last decades. Apart from citizens, the attempts were also made by several airlines like Damania, Vayudoot, Air Deccan and more. However, these attempts were failed due to the limited connectivity and poor infrastructure at the airport.
After the establishment of new airport terminal, Spiecejet and Air India took a step to connect Surat to all major cities in India. In March 2012, Air India also started International flight commercial flight services for two international destination namely Frankfurt and Toronto.
